There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den wagering is banned. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income acquired from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a few restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are for all intents and purposes needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is accurate of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling den, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel complex that highlights numerous amenities on top of the casino, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 table games.
